Weiqi (Go): The Ancient Mind Sport of Strategy and Focus

Go, originally called Weiqi (围棋) in China, is one of the oldest board games in the world. When the game spread to Japan centuries ago, it became known as “igo”, which later gave rise to the English name Go.

How the Game is Played
Played on a grid with black and white stones, the objective is to control territory while surrounding the opponent’s stones. Although the rules are simple, the game is incredibly deep, requiring strategy, foresight, and adaptability. Go is not only a contest of skill, but it also cultivates focus, patience, and creative thinking, showing a player’s mindset in every match.

Competitive and Structured Play

Mind Sport Go

Beyond casual play, Go also exists as a competitive mind sport known as Mind Sport Go. This structured form emphasizes strategy, mental endurance, and skill development, giving players the opportunity to compete in tournaments, ranking systems, and organized events. At Persatuan Sukan Weiqi Malaysia, Mind Sport Go provides a platform for enthusiasts to grow their abilities, challenge themselves, and connect with a community of like-minded players.
